Repertoire
Each competitor must prepare the following: ONE Telemann Fantasia of the performer’s choice – all movements. Ornamentations and repeats are at the performer’s discretion. (Edition: Performer’s choice, Barenreiter strongly preferred) AND Francis Poulenc – Sonata for Flute and Piano, Mvt. 1 OR Eldin Burton – Sonatine for Flute and Piano, Mvt. 1 |

- To register, please click the "2018 Young Artist Competition Online Application" button above and fill out the form to submit your information. Registration for this event closes on February 2, 2018. No late applications will be accepted.
- The competition will take place during the 2018 Montana Flute Festival on Saturday, March 16, in Heritage Hall on the Great Falls College Montana State University Campus. Pending the number of applicants, the competition may be split in to two separate rounds. In the event of a two-round competition, all performers will perform their selected Telemann Fantasie in the morning, and 3-5 finalists will be selected to perform their entire program (Telemann and Poulenc or Burton) in the afternoon. You will receive an email from the Competition Coordinator by February 16 with the details of the competition as well as your performance time.
- All applicants must be current members of the Montana Flute Association and 25 years old or younger at the time of the competition. Previous 1st prize winners are ineligible to compete.
- There is a non-refundable application fee of $25, to be paid at the time you register for the competition.
- All performances are open to the public.
- All judges’ decisions are final, and not all prizes need be awarded.
- The MFA’s official competition pianist is Lee Hancock (leh197900@gmail.com). The fee for a 30-minute rehearsal and for your competition performance(s) is $50, paid directly to the pianist.
- You must have an original score with you for the performance. You may keep the original with you or perform with it – it is your choice. Copyright laws state that you must have an original copy of the work present when you perform.

About Margaret Cornils Luke
Margaret is an active flutist and composer, and her recorded works are widely published. Margaret Cornils Luke has performed alongside such classical music greats as Isaac Stern and Mstislav Rostropovich, and has also soloed with contemporary personalities including Garrison Keillor and Anne Murray. She has been active in theater direction as well as church sanctuaries. She has studied flute privately with Geoffrey Gilbert (teacher to Galway, Bennett, and Wye), Charles Delaney, Mary Louis Poor, Peter Middleton, Gale Coffee, Tadeu Coelho, and Jacob Berg.
Margaret Cornils Luke has over 35 years of teaching experience from beginning level to college and professional level. She has taught at the following colleges; Clarke University, Loras College, University of Wisconsin/Platteville, Hamline University, College of St. Catherine’s and Concordia College. She has taught at the following high schools; Glenbard South, West Chicago, Wabonsee Valley, Woodstock, Sterling and Galena which are all located in Illinois. She has taught privately and performed master classes all across the country.
Margaret has performed, judged and her compositions have been performed at several National Flute Association National Conventions. She has adjudicated competitions from All State to International Young Artist Competition. She has hosted and organized State Flute Festivals. Margaret Cornils Luke is a National Arts Associate with Sigma Alpha Iota.
Margaret has brought to stage flute standards from Syrinx by Debussy to the Poulenc Sonata. She has scheduled newly-commissioned work as well, ranging from Michael Gilbertson’s Sonata to Gary Schocker’s Morning Noon Night. She has premiered new concertos and has in turn been commissioned to compose works for all instruments and voices. She has been heard live on national public radio and been featured on national public television.
